Some of our Year 5 and 6 children attended the exciting launch of the BASF ‘Science Xperience’ this term, an on-site interactive resource at Bletchley based Chemetall, designed to inspire curiosity and interest among Primary age school children. During their visit the children replicated some activities that Chemetall do for their customers. These included testing the pH of various substances using universal indicator, examining a variety of surfaces under an electron microscope, and using ultraviolet lights to test parts of an aeroplane engine, in order to create a suitable report for a customer. The activities are designed to engage children in science in a real world context and to help develop their investigative skills. Our children certainly impressed with the questions they asked! It was a unique opportunity to visit a real laboratory and for the children to understand the role chemistry plays in their everyday lives.
